LOWER ZAMBEZI ACCOMMODATION

The Lower Zambezi package offers a few more luxuries to the rusticness of our Seclusion package in the Kafue.

The lodge sits on the banks of the Zambezi River and consists of thatched chalets with en-suite ablutions. All chalets have a view of the river and each one has been designed with a Zambian style in mind.

The lodge is situated just 10 minutes from the Lower Zambezi National Park but with the amount of game around the lodge, game viewing begins the second you step outside of your chalet each morning. It is not uncommon to have elephants wander through the camp each day.

ANIMALS TO LOOK OUT FOR

The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4092 square kilometers, but most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment along the northern end which acts as a physical barrier to most of the parks animal species. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the rivers edge. ‘Island hopping’ buffalo and waterbuck are common. The park also hosts good populations of lion and leopard and listen too for the ubiquitous cry of the fish eagle.

KAFUE ACCOMMODATION

The camp sits on the banks of the Kafue River and consists of thatched chalets with en-suite ablutions. All chalets have a view of the river and the gentle rapids of the river can be heard throughout your stay - some have said it sounds like being on the ocean. But you dont get the sounds of hippo, lion and the whooping of hyena near the ocean!

ANIMALS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Some species found in the Kafue cannot be found anywhere else in Zambia. This is due to the different habitat and higher altitude. There are always the usual suspects to look out for such as lion, leopard, elephant and many antelope, but here is the only place to see cheetah, sitatunga, oribi, blue duiker and roan to name a few.

DETAILED ITINERERY

DAY ONE
Leave Lusaka early morning for the road transfer to the camp in the Kafue National Park (+/- 4hrs). Lunch will then be served in camp after which you have some time to relax and familiarise yourself with the beautifully secluded surroundings. From this point onwards you wont see another vehicle or tourist for days except your own party, your guide and your game drive vehicle! In the mid afternoon you set off on a game drive into the most protected area in the region. Because of this protection the wildlife is extremely abundant and elephant and lion and leopard are not uncommon. This part of Zambia is where you experience the African wild as it should be. As the sun starts to set over the river, your guide will find a good vantage point to stop where you can sip sundowners and watch the diurnal world fall asleep and the nocturnal world awake. Once the sun has set you set off on a night drive where you may see porcupine, civet, leopard, bush baby, hippo and lion amongst other things. The drive then brings you back to camp in time for dinner. After dinner you can relax and chat around the fire or you can turn-in early ready for the early start the following day.

DAY TWO
You wake up at the crack of dawn and have some tea, coffee and a biscuit as the sun rises. Once everyone is awake and ready to go you depart in the safari vehicle and head out for the full day game drive. Around 9.30 am when the stomach is rumbling you will stop somewhere with a great view of the river or the open plains and have a bush breakfast. After a relaxing breakfast you then continue slowly onward watching the wildlife go about its daily business. After a hearty picnic lunch you continue onward on an afternoon game drive following the meandering river where the wildlife tends to concentrate during the afternoon heat. You will then stop somewhere with a good vantage point of the sunset and sip a few sundowners as the day turns to night. Once the sun has set it is time to night drive your way back to camp where dinner will be served. After dinner is a good time to sit around the campfire and talk about what you have seen so far. Your guide will be more than happy to give more detail about the day's sightings.

DAY THREE
Depart the camp early in the morning and enjoy a game drive in the local area, perhaps looking for the animals you heard throughout the night and may still be in the neighbourhood. After a camp breakfast your guide will then escort you, along with an armed scout, into the bush on foot. Here your guide will tell you about all the things you can’t see from a vehicle like spore, droppings, tracks and hiding places. Your guide will also get you as close as possible to the wildlife in a safe manner and without disturbing the animals. After a few hours of seeing the wildlife in the most natural way possible you will return to camp and have lunch. After lunch you can either do a spot of fishing or take a slow river cruise down the Kafue river and do some wildlife spotting from the water. After a little relaxing and boating it is time to head out on a late afternoon drive followed by sundowners and another night drive. Dinner is then served in camp around the usual time of 8.30pm.

DAY FOUR
The last chance to enjoy the surrounding wildlife on your last drive in the Kafue Park. The final day of your Kafue safari starts at the crack of dawn. After tea, coffee and biscuits you take your last safari drive of the Kafue trip with picnic breakfast. You are then driven back to camp for lunch. After lunch is where you can relax and/or do some fishing and then prepare for the journey back to Lusaka (+/-4hrs). An overnight in Lusaka is required before departing the following morning. There are several guest houses, backpackers and hotels in Lusaka which can be arranged according to your budget.

DAY FIVE
Leave Lusaka early morning for the road transfer to Lower Zambezi (+/- 2hrs). You then meet our boat on the Zambezi River for the boat cruise to camp (+/-2 hrs). This could be your first wildlife encounter as the animals, especially elephants, come down to the river to drink throughout the day. Lunch will then be served in camp after which you have some time to relax and familiarise yourself with your surroundings. In the mid afternoon you set off on a game drive into the park where you experience the African wild up close as you take in the sights and sounds of the first safari of the trip. As the sun starts to set over the river, your guide will find a good vantage point to stop where you can sip sundowners and watch the diurnal world fall asleep and the nocturnal world awake. Once the sun has set you set off on a night drive where you may see porcupine, civet, leopard and lion amongst other things. The drive then brings you back to camp in time for dinner. After dinner you can relax and chat around the fire or you can turn-in early ready for the early start the following day.

DAY SIX
Day two is all about the park! You wake up at the crack of dawn and have some tea or coffee and biscuits as the sun rises. Once everyone is awake and ready to go you get into the safari vehicle and head for the national park where you will spend the whole day. The full day safari drive gives you the best chance of seeing the wildlife you want to see as you can go deep into the park and go to places that are not normally visited often. Around 9.30 am when the stomach is rumbling you will stop somewhere with a great view of the Zambezi River and have breakfast. After a relaxing breakfast you then continue your safari slowly through the park until lunch time. A picnic spread lunch will then be laid on in a nice shady area with another great view over the river and the park. After lunch it is then back onto the safari vehicle for more game viewing which will take you up to sunset. Sunset is then the time to reflect on the day’s game viewing so far as you sip your drink of choice watching the sun set over the Zambezi River. After sundowners and the world is in darkness, it is then time to night-drive your way back to camp where dinner will be served.

DAY SEVEN
You depart the camp early in the morning and take a slow game drive in the local area where you can try and find the animals you heard throughout the night.  You return to camp for breakfast afterwhich you head out on a river cruise. Seeing an elephant cooling off on the river banks from the vantage point of a boat is an incredible experience, and would no doubt be a highlight of your safari! Finally you get back to camp in time for lunch. After lunch and a little relaxing it is time to head out on a slow afternoon drive into the park followed by sundowners and another night drive. Dinner is then served in camp around the usual time of 8.30pm.

DAY EIGHT
No safari is complete without a walking safari. The final day of your Lower Zambezi safari starts at the crack of dawn. After tea, coffee and biscuits your guide will escort you, along with an armed scout, into the bush on foot. Here your guide will tell you about all the things you can’t see from a vehicle like spore, droppings, tracks and hiding places. Your guide will also get you as close as possible to the wildlife in a safe manner and without disturbing the wildlife. After a few hours of seeing the wildlife in the most natural way possible you will have a picnic breakfast after which you will be met by the safari vehicle. You are then driven back to camp where you can relax and/or do some fishing for the mighty tiger fish. Lunch is then served after which you pack your bags and begin your boat cruise back upstream (+/- 3 hrs) where you will meet your transfer vehicle back to Lusaka (+/-2hrs).
